"Teacher" a.k.a Kid-Indoctrinator for Socialism

So I'm a teacher in one of the largest school districts in the nation. Yesterday I get an e-mail from my principal addressed to the entire staff. It says:

There has been some controversy about whether students will be required to view President Obama’s September 8 address.

It goes on to state how principals throughout the district have been advised by the superintendent to abide by parents' wishes to have their children be released from any viewing of the address, which… Continue

Three

While I had been laying next to Ruby and asking questions I knew she could not hear much less understand, such as “Is there someone you are missing right now?” or “Are you happy here?”, Ann had set upon the task to fuel and build up the stamina of this little dog who showed all the physical signs of living through some very hard times in recent days. She looked like a puppy and at times she moved like a puppy, but when you touched her it was not hard to imagine her skeletal frame as it was… Continue

toozday

After taking photos to send to her foster mother showing that Ruby was getting along with our other four dogs, we realized that Ruby was almost completely deaf. She was completely oblivious to any commotion involving the other dogs unless she could see it. This presented us with one challenge and resolved another. There was really no point in changing her name from the one given to her by the pound. She would never hear it. So as we could not pin a name on her, we simply pinned Toozday on the… Continue

one...

This text will probably become a web page with photos/videos in remembrance of the sweetest creature I think I ever have met. I know. I have joined the ranks of the online basket case. The story won't be a downer. Writing this is reminding me of all these little moments of joy I could not have had otherwise. This may take me a while, but I need to work my way through some pain, I had not been prepared for.. I hope in the end I will find the courage to see this as something other than a tragedy.… Continue

For Chig

A Dog on his Master

As young as I look,
I am growing older faster than he,
seven to one
is the ratio they tend to say.

Whatever the number,
I will pass him one day
and take the lead
the way I do on our walks in the woods.

And if this ever manages
to cross his mind,
it would be the sweetest
shadow I have ever cast on snow or grass.

Goodbye Ruby Toozday

I wish I had been a little more awake when you came to say goodbye shortly after midnight, and turned around to go outside for the last time. I felt you had left us when we found you at 02:20.
I will feel it even more when I wake up. You were a blessing.

What Truly Motivates Us...

This TED Talk is going to change my teaching practice.

This guy (Dan Pink) argues that there's more potential to our creative energy when the motivated by a sense of altruism as opposed to cash incentives. If this is true, then there are some big-ass cracks in the pillars of Capitalism and economic theory.

Regardless, it definitely has implications for my classroom and how I structure my program. It validates "service-learning" projects where students are involved in… Continue

Poe's Law

Don't mind me if this is old news to anyone...But I came across this video tonight and I could not decide if I had just witnessed the single most terrifying conversation I've ever heard or some sort of brilliant parody. So I checked out her YouTube channel and, although this particular video is convincingly real, the others seemed like a LonelyGirl-esque hoax. Pretty positive it is.

if so..................... genius.

What does YOUR president smell like?

A blog inspired by Pypermarru1

Two years ago, Michelle Obama revealed in an interview with Glamour magazine that her girls refused to cuddle with her husband in the morning because he is too "snore-y and stinky." Stinky, that is, because of his cigarette smoking.

This got me thinking about what President Obama smells like now. My gut-check personality assessment of the presidents of my lifetime tells me that President Obama wears Drakkar Noir.

Probably… Continue

Pain and Clutter

Clutter is becoming a metaphor for my life. Not just the clutter of papers, unopened mail, boxes from Amazon, and electronic junk I see, but the clutter in my head. That's the worst clutter, the stuff I wake up with that is a part of what keeps me from moving forward. In fact, moving forward has become a meaningless phrase to me. That's partly what chronic pain does to you. I have literally been to between 30 to 50 doctors in the past 20 years in an effort to get pain relief. They are so afraid… Continue
