Up until I heard the ending I was going to say that's what the wizard gets for being a toe-kisser.
What did he expect from the Catholic Church? Sincerity?, honesty?, Compassion?

When I was poking around the web for medieval images of partridges I learned that, traditionally, partridges were considered untrustworthy. They were supposed to steal the eggs from other birds' nests instead of laying their own (as you can see in the illustration I used). So I'm guessing there are other little details in the story that would have entertained the audience of 700 years ago.
