Thank you, BlanchNoE and Ogier! It was an interesting project.

 

Lima, I did the transitions and the edits. For the past month I've been experimenting with the luma key filter which allows you to fade out parts of one layer in favor of the footage beneath it based on lightness or darkness. So all of the dark will disappear from a piece of footage while the light portions remain. (And of course you can key frame this...). I like this a lot better than cross-fade transitions.

 

I also used the luma key feature to composite the swimmers into the stepped fountain, combine the lightbulb with the flowing water, etc. More than half of what you see probably involves the luma key.
