Whatever floats your boat...

Looking back I wish this was a little tighter, and that I'd spelled Terrence Malick's name correctly in the end credits.

I'm beginning to see that sometimes it doesn't make sense to pan over a still image if you're gonna cut away from it in three seconds. That's a problem here.

I often wish I knew the rules of thumb for things like that. Learning the software isn't enough.

excellent! (now I want to see Badlands)

the panning...the zooming....the fading....it's all a process to me. guess we learn as we go and away we go :)

Thank you, Blanch. Once I had the beginning and ending clips selected I figured I was in pretty good shape to wander a bit in between.

Victoria, Badlands is a remarkable movie. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

its funny how I miss so much when I was younger and notice a lot more as I have gotten older...

badlands and syd and nancy, both its been a while since first viewing.

almost like philosophy... you can see the same quote hundred times and then one day you actually read the quote...

=)

I think you did swell, Geoff. You obviously do a lot of thinking and planning when it comes to finding images that link together for a narrative of this kind.

And three seconds is PLENTY of time for a still image. I've been studying the editing in TV commercials. The typical 30-second commercial contains between 12 and 20 segments. I'm learning that the brain absorbs much more than we realize in brief spurts of exposure.

NJ, I agree that three seconds isn't really too short for a clip, but I'm beginning to feel that if you cut to a still images that lasts three seconds or so, you shouldn't necessarily track across it, or zoom in or out, unless it helps the rhythm of the piece, expresses something, or underlines a link or disjunction between images.

Personally, I usually don't like fast cutting very much because I think it's often empty dazzle. Commercials are a special case. If you're selling a car and you want to associate some broad and powerful concepts like luxury or performance with your product, quick cuts work very well.

Lima, I like going back to things I've seen in the past and seeing if my attitude has changed. I thought about doing a vlog about this with a film called "King of Hearts" which I first saw when I was 10, the second time when I was 18 or 19, and a third time when I was around 30. Very different reactions each time. Very different reactions each time. (When I was playing around with the idea I watched it again when I was 49 and my reaction wasn't different from when I was 30. So I guess that's my final answer...)
