I just saw that the Troy sequence comes across as much darker than my Vimeo "original". Don't really understand why.

Hey Geoff. I just found out you left VH- that makes me doubly-glad that you're here.
I love this vlog. When you first posted it, I commented about how it had a documentary feel to it. You replied that it's more common to see this kind of vlog/commentary on Youtube but honestly, in all my Tube-travels, I've never seen these.
Would you mind sharing some YouTube links that do these kinds of vlogs...?

Much enjoyed the first half and coming back for second half later. AHHhh the subtleties, where the universal truths we can all relate to hide (sorta). I love it that you said : " I think it's deliberate though I'm not sure,..." THAT was so much of Hitchcock's magic. It's fun to hear someone so obviously passionate about films talk about 'em. They didn't need all those fancy-shmancy effects back then,...though I wouldn't mind seeing what Hitchcock would do with "Troy"'s budget and effects team.

Syd, I saw something here about using the "old" embed code so that's what I chose. It is a nighttime scene but when I embedded it two or three months ago on VH and CH the Troy sequence was much clearer. I've never actually seen this sort of movie commentary on YouTube (never looked for it either) but I have seen really interesting straight documentary stuff about movies and obscure filmmakers, often clearly made by young people in college or just out. I've been very impressed at times. Maybe that's what I meant.
Question: Am I gonna have trouble with copyrighted music on Vimeo?
Blanch, I wonder if Hitchcock wasn't better off without modern computer effects. He was a decent enough artist so he could work with matte painters, etc. and really impress his own ideas onto their work. I have a hunch that most of the computer effects geniuses today have the artistic sensibilities of 14 year old boys, and their skills are so technical and sorta abstruse that it's a rare director who can achieve a really personal vision working with them. The ones who succeed (Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton) seem to be part 14 year old boy themselves. (Yes, this is a horrid generalization for which I have no actual evidence.)

Geoff, I've never personally had trouble with music copyright on Vimeo and I'm an uber-pirate, as you may or may not know. ;o)

I have not had music copyright problems on vimeo ... good to see you are there as well geoff! I enjoyed this when I first got to see it, so good to see you have a "vault" now.
not sure why your vid content has been reduced at vimeo, I always thought vimeos stuff was better quality... I am all about the perfect clear pictures these days...

Hi Lima: This particular video has always been on Vimeo and was embedded before with better results on other Ning sites. Quality isn't too critical to me because I don't have your elegant skills. I just want to you to be able to see what I'm talking about.

Geoff, if you're so inclined, there's a great member forum on Vimeo where you can get help with the quality issues. It may be that others have had the same problems. Lima's vid in her blog looks beautiful, no loss of quality there and the other vids embedded from Vimeo seem okay, too.

Syd, the video looks fine on Vimeo and always has (the wavy glass effect and flat colors at the beginning are filters). The embed also looked good on VloggerHeads and ChatterHeads three months ago. So I'm thinking it's a fluke or has something to do with the Ning upgrade.
I will visit the Vimeo quality page though, just to get some settings that more or less ensure good quality at smaller file sizes.... I basically output from iMovie at DV quality and then downsample using a program called ffmpegX. In the past I would choose flash for VloggerHeads but Vimeo doesn't seem to accept that so I guess I'll use QuickTime.
