So I'm a teacher in one of the largest school districts in the nation. Yesterday I get an e-mail from my principal addressed to the entire staff. It says:
There has been some controversy about whether students will be required to view President Obama’s September 8 address.
It goes on to state how principals throughout the district have been advised by the superintendent to abide by parents' wishes to have their children be released from any viewing of the address, which happens to be about the importance of education.
In case you didn't know, people who are firmly within the grasp of those who control the money and power in this country have mindlessly been duped into acting against their own interests (nothing new) through subtle fear tactics and the mobilization of their pundit-whores who have everything to gain from stirring the fringe element of their radical base. Big media's taken the bait and have disproportionately given these crack-pots a bigger voice, making it seem as though they're in the majority, as usual (see health insurance "debate").
Hence, the memo to the staff and a letter that went home with children, giving it even more fuel should there be any parents left who haven't seen or heard what began with a Fox News anti-Obama campaign. It summarized the controversy and ended with, "If you do not want your child to view this address, please email me and I will let your child’s 3rd period teacher know to excuse your child." (My principal needs an editor, I know)
Once again, ideologues try to get their tendrils into my classroom where the only agenda I have as a teacher is to teach my kids to use their noggin and think critically so they don't grow up to become sheep the way these idiot-parents have done (idiot-teachers, too, who believe the same).
So if anyone's reading this who happens to be one of those willingly-ignorant dunces calling their child's school to make sure their child won't see the address, just know that I hadn't planned on turning the TV on during 3rd period Tuesday
...until I saw that memo.
The lesson objectives will focus on listening skills and standards of public speaking- Obama sets the bar high on that one. Oh, and lets not forget the application of critical thinking skills through open discussion and written reflection. Those are all Language Arts standards and it is MY job to teach them all.
What a great teaching moment this will be. How could I have almost dismissed it and not seen the learning value there?
Maybe I'll even tape it so that ALL my students (all 130 of them) won't miss this opportunity. I mean, how often does the President of the United States address them directly? Oh wait...pretty much every four years. Nonetheless...
Thank you, idiots.
And thank you Fox News.
