Whatever floats your boat...

Still tracing my grandmother's life around town. This I.O.O.F. building stood at this corner all through the years my grandmother lived here. I doubt that she passed it everyday, but she most certainly would have had reason to pass through this intersection on occasion.

In her time, an electric street car passed by here.

Thanks, Pyper. See the clump of eucalyptus trees at the end of the block on the left side of both sets of images? That's the grove where I do my volunteer hawk research. This made me wonder the other day if my hawks have been nesting there generation after generation going back a century.

Dang NJ! You make me want to search out my family's footsteps and(!) drag the Audubon books out at the cottage so I can learn the difference between hawks, eagles, falcons and other birds of prey. I am developing a love/hate relationship with your videos. *chortle*

@ Marie: I would love to see some of your family's footsteps.

Almost all raptors, other than owls, are often generically referred to as "hawks." But there are differences between, say, falcons and eagles. Your Audubon books will explain those finer points. The ones I monitor are Cooper's hawks.

I do know Cooper's hawks! We used to have an old Linden tree and for several years a Cooper's hawk would eat in out back yard. It's meal was usually another bird and the grass would be covered with feathers when he was done. It was amazing to watch. Not a big bird for a bird of prey, but fascinating. I'm dragging those darn books out for sure!

For family footsteps I'd have to do some traveling. Might just have to go on the 'to do' list.

That is so cool and so sad. Does it mean I'm old that I long for olden times ?

Don't answer that.

@ Blanche: There is something sad about it, I think because it's something that is irretrievably gone. But no, it doesn't mean you're old if you long for olden times. Olden times have held an appeal for me since I was very young.

@ Peacenik: It is kind of cool. There are ghosts of things everywhere you stand. If you believe in that kind of crap, anyway.

@ Ruth: Yeah, that corner feels kind of soulless to me in its present state. Although that corner store does have some neat embellished capitals at the tops of its columns (too tiny to see in the vid). The 20th century didn't lavish much on public decoration, I'm afraid.

Doesn't look like there's anything left of the original structure.  The fact that the trees are the same is VERY cool.
