We all need an enemy, and media have done a great job deflecting where it is we should place the blame when it comes to economically-hard and politically-dangerous times. Media thrives on conflict.

It would seem that the real enemy is not only the greed of power brokers who gamble away our economic stability, the well-being of our children, and the balance between ideological left and right, but also (as some here have pointed out) the greed within ourselves as we act & vote on our own self-interests without care to the greater good.
