Yes! they love water, they are drawn to it,we had one growing up, he was a great nanny,he would bark and go get mom if we were doing anything we weren't supposed to be doing lol..one special thing about newf's is that they actually do a breast stroke and not a doggy paddle and use their tail for a rudder
After my beloved little doggy died, I was desperate for a dog. So I found a beautiful picture of a black Newf standing with a little girl. I put this pic on my refrigerator and there it still sits. My kids think I am crazy because they see me scratch his ears and talk to him on occasion. Hehehe!
I ended up with a smaller version of that dog and her name is Greta....a golden retriever!!
The more I learn about the history of domestic dogs, the more I'm amazed at all the varied ways they have come to serve us. I didn't know that dogs have been specifically bred for water rescue. You educated me today. Thank you!
@ peacenik..the retriever is also a great water dog, and very loving,i bet that she follows you everywhere lol
@NatureJunkie..thank you!, yes they and lab retrievers both are bred and instinctively are drawn to water and water rescue, the French Coast Guard use Newfoundlands for rescue.they have a coat that keeps them warm even in freezing water. There are many instances where after rescuing someone they lay with them keeping them warm till help arrives.
