Whatever floats your boat...

Why President Obama NEEDED to visit Joplin, MO in person.

(In 2008, the Midwestern Floods affected seven states following months of heavy rains, overflowing rivers, and levee failures. This area of Illinois had been underwater for a month at the time I took this footage.

@ Marie and Spacemonkey: It was overwhelming. I was traveling by it on an Amtrak train. The whole train quieted down as people looked out at it in stunned silence.

I've lived through a couple hurricanes and there's nothing like seeing the devastation firsthand.  Until you do, you just don't get it.

It seriously hurts my heart to see the aftermath of peoples lives buried or thrown all over after a disaster.

It's always sobering. We've seen comparable devastation in my neck of the woods and yeah, seeing a picture of it is nothing like seeing it right in front of you.

@ Ruth: I've never had a natural disaster harm me in a personal way, but I saw many of the sites I was familiar with get destroyed in the Bay Area earthquake of 1989. In particular I remember seeing the gaping holes along Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz where destroyed buildings had been removed from their foundations. It hit me in the gut in a way that news photos and video could not do.

@ Pyper: Me too. I can't imagine losing every material thing I've ever owned.

@ Blanche: I worry about my family and friends like you in the midwest. It seems like you get every kind of disaster out there, except for tsunamis.

I know they had to sacrifice a lot of the farm land in order to save the more heavily-populated areas, but it sucks all the same.  Is this close to where you are NJ?
