Wow.
Unhinged is a powerful word. We use it so commonly to mean losing control of emotion. But it implies the loss of a door to a compartment of our lives. This poem is beautiful and unsettling and comforting at the same time.
Thanks NJ. Back-story : I just recently connected with the biological mother of my very dear, departed brother and it's an awful lot like getting to have a piece of him back. She is a trip in many of the same ways he was (or vice-versa). She was very young and abandoned by the father when she had him. She wrote a letter every year for 30 years to the agency hoping that he'd get curious enough to inquire. So yeah, the experience has been all those things.
The imagery gave some hints and I suspected that there was a story like this behind it. I hope Susan's connection with you provided some of the answers to her questions. A letter every year for 30 years, only to learn that he departed long ago? That's heartbreaking. A little bit like Philomena.
@ Amy - I was uncertain when I first watched this, The poetry was so intense but I could not place the relationship to the photos...I am glad you gave us the backstory here. It is so much MORE potent, now that I know that is your brother's legacy...and history...with a beautiful piece coming back to you at this time in YOUR history....Peace to you
Oh man...
I'm so happy for you, Amy- to get this little wave of your brother wash back over your life after so long...
