Jim, ya know what's so fascinating about viewing pics from this time...it that it presents the ideal of what America was striving for...the iconography; plenty, nourishment, material things, family life, owning an automobile and a home w/a dishwasher, watching baseball on the television...it's what still defines us today and it remains the ideal. Forget the Cold War, the rise of the mafia, McCarthyism, and all that under-the-surface shit that was the reality...THIS is the dream, and remains so even today

The expectations put forth by the advertisers, when compared to the abilities of the many, resulted in a staggering increase in attendance at local AA meetings. Oh, to sit and drink and smoke to my heart's content in my heated Lanai in January...

Another excellent marriage of montage and music, Jim!

Thank you, sir. I would imagine the music came from the Melachrino Strings and Orchestra's "Music to Read Popular Science By"

Just catching this one now, Jim. I wonder if that "good to the last drop" gesture caught on. If so, it was free advertising for Maxwell House. =) I remember another one from the 1950's like that: the Posturepedic Mattress gesture. In my family, if anyone were slouching, someone would form a letter P with both hands and say, "Posturpedic!" to make them sit up straight. =)

Funny how the picture of the man washing dishes is such a significant statement. It should really be an ordinary occurence, wouldn't you say? Love the yellow formica table and the biscuit daydream. That OJ girl could be a precursor to Anita Bryant. =)
