I love the Inspector Lynley mysteries on PBS. I subscribe to Netflix and have almost watched all of them now. Some of them I've even watched twice.
For some reason I really enjoy the characters. I love a good mystery or thriller. Inspector Lynley comes from the upper class but doesn't like people to know it. He works hard, is good at what he does and occassionally comes across as arrogant. His partner is his opposite. Havers comes from the working class and also works hard. Because she wasn't born well-off, she seems to have a prejudice against those who are. She tends to let her emotions muddle the picture at times, but she is also a bright detective. They make a perfect team. This is what I gather from the movies at least.
Although I love reading and always have at least one book on me at all times, I have not been able to read one of the Inspector Lynley mysteries by Elizabeth George. This is a shame, I know.
I have picked up books by her many times but I don't believe I've ever gotten past page thirty. I just can't force myself to continue. The only reason I can figure is long sentences. Silly, I know. I just get lost in her long sentences. So lost, in fact, I have to go back sometimes and read them two or three times until I figure out what exactly was said. It makes reading her a bit difficult. Most of the time I find myself cutting the sentences apart in my head. Is there any reason three or four sentences have to be combined into one? Grammatically, I know there is nothing wrong with them. It's just hard for me to get the gist of it the first time around. There is another author like this but I can't remember their name - probably because I've never completed reading their books. Unfortunate for them their books haven't been made into movies on PBS.
So this year I have decided to read an Elizabeth George novel. That is the goal I hope to accomplish before my annual trek to UCLA's Festival of Books in April.
Last week, MrPoe and I went to the $1 Book Store and I purchased sixteen books - two of which are Elizabeth George novels. Today I began reading Deception On His Mind. After one hour, I have reached page twenty-eight. Not a very strong start, I know. At least I haven't quit yet. The first time I thought of quitting was on page five. At this point in time, I only have 685 pages to go.
