The Foster Chronicles: Mister's First Day

Saturday, July 23, 2011. I made a 200-mile round trip to retrieve my latest foster dog, a ten-year-old sheltie who'd been seized from a backyard breeder. He has never lived indoors, is not house-trained, and does not know his name. And he does not trust people.

Lots o' work ahead.

Mister is gorgeous! I have a feeling you two will be fast friends soon! ;-)

He seems wary with a stranger, not cowed or frightened, so I bet progress, when it comes, will be fast. He's a good-looking dog.

@ Kevin: He's no where close to trusting me yet, but it gets better every day. As in one step forward, two baby steps back. I will be honored when he considers me his friend.

@ Geoff: You're exactly right. He isn't fearful about anything, but with people, he's watchful and wary. He's been socialized to other dogs and he's very smart, so I believe that in time, he can be socialized to people too.

It's not that he's shy, NJ, it's that when you talk about Organic chicken liver, he assumes you are a hippie and refuses to encourage such behavior.

Offer him some highly processed "begg'n strips" and see if he doesn't leap in your lap with joy.  Just a theory.  LOL

Pyper is SUCH a psychologist  when it comes to dogs, even though we all know that she is really all about CATS! I must admit I like her theory though.

Awwww...another lovely story.  You'll have him eating out of your hand in no time.

Pyper, no one here makes me laugh like you do :-)

@ Pyper: You know what? I'm ready to try your advice. I was shooting an adoption video of a labrador this weekend, and his foster mom was feeding him Begg'n Strips. I thought, "no way in hell I would feed my dog that processed crap." But the dog LOVED the stuff. I've tried hot dogs and cheese with limited success. I'm ready to try anything.

@ Peacenik: As usual, Pyper scoops me in the common sense department. That's why she's the new aunt of the family.

@ Ruth: It's now several days after this video was shot, and he does eat out of my hand occasionally, but only after he's gone through much internal deliberation about the "risk" involved. Progress is going slowly.
