I get very emotional about organ donation and find it incomprehensible that families do not sit down and have this conversation. We are all registered on our health cards as organ donors. Then again, I find it incomprehensible that people do not have a will, living will, power of attorney, or discussed their funeral/party/burial preferences. *wink* If you can't afford an attorney to write the documents, there are plenty of free kits, cheap kits, or scribble it down on the back of your grocery list.

People die, young people die... everyone dies. When the worst happens do not sit around waiting for a doctor to start the conversation, but be the first to bring it up. Not a moment to lose and they are welcome to take anything they want. Organ donation is 'Life gripped from the jaws of death.'

They are welcome to take anything they want. At least they are in our family. That is our choice.

Wow NJ.  If I weren't already a donor, this video would spur me to action.  Thanks

Good video.

I happen to be a donor.  Have been since I got a drivers License.  Last time I renewed my License I was told that I could register as a donor on-line - that way if anything happens to me and I don't have my license with me, I am register in a database and any hospital world-wide can plug in my name and I pop up a donor.

Being a donor at the DMV does not put you in the donor database on-line.  You have to do both.  It is part of protocol (is my understanding) that when admited into a emergency room or hospital your information is check against the database.

The donor registration is by state and it breaks it down in a very specific way - what organs, how do you what it to happen...etc.  I'm registered with both.

My New Mexico drivers license has a cute little heart <3 at the bottom that says donor.  New Mexico is advanced, we don't do stickers....;)

To me organ donation is a no brainer.  when I'm dead, I don't need my body - Take what you want.  I don't have religious reservations or a need to feel like I'm living on in some way.

NatureJunkie - You've got that great shy smile - Don't you ever give that away :0)

@ Marie: "When the worst happens do not sit around waiting for a doctor to start the conversation, but be the first to bring it up." I wish I had said it that simply and that well. You're right, there is not a moment to lose in such circumstances.

@ Syd: I know I'm preaching to the choir to most if not all of the people who might watch this, but thanks for that. Guess those dreaded public speaking classes I took paid off.

@ Pyper: Well damn, I wish you had made a video, people could have actually learned something useful! I feel ignorant to say it, but I didn't know about those online registries. I checked into it just now and every state has one. Anyone reading this now can finish the whole process in just a few minutes by going to http://www.organdonor.gov/donor/registry.shtm#CA.

I also got myself tested and typed for the National Bone Marrow Registry about four years ago. A very easy process that involves swabbing the inside of one's cheeks. They sometimes have registry drives, similar to blood drives, where they will bring an equipped truck to a work site, community center, or school: http://www.marrow.org/.

Great blog. It never occurred to me to put parameters on what I would be willing to donate. I plan on a good long rest when I die so they can have whatever they want. I have my will on my iPad although I'm still looking for someone who'd be interested in my M&M dispenser collection and my treasured colored paperclips.
