@Geoff- The creature Existing within this family whilst being completely independent from it could be very disturbing to child reading the story. Children thrive on structure and clear rules and expectations. When things seem chaotic or unpredictable, that alone can induce fear. Isn't it interesting, it doesn't take horrible looking monsters to scare us, only the threat of the unknown or unexpected?

There is an element of accomplishment and a natural human desire to conquer our fears if we seek to grow and I think the pursuit of heightened levels of courage.  To say, " i did that, I beat that", is a sign of a healthy growing human being. Maybe thats why we go into that dark room or challenge ourselves to endure something we fear.

On flying monkeys- I haven't met a person who wasn't afraid of that scene! Even my son's generation. The monkeys are in his top 3 scariest scenes. Number 2 would be the scene in Willy Wonka where he is taunting the guests in the boat as they go thru the psychedelic tunnel of terror.  Psychological terror is one you don't get over as easily as seeing a monster.

Good reading of the Gorey story and a great choice of mood music for it. Unfortunately, my parents did not read to me at all once I got beyond the age of four, and before then, just Beatrix Potter and a thin collection of fairy tales. So I missed out on a lot of children's classics, like Mary Poppins, for instance. I didn't even get to see the movie because my dad thought movies were a waste of money. But I've seen the trailer, so I understand your terror.

I used to watch all the old horror movies on the weekend on a black and white TV in the 70's. :D

NOOOoo, NOT the BUNny's coat!

I remember that story you're reading !

I loved that interloper immediately and wanted him to come to my house for s'mores. The first movie that really scared me wasn't even a movie. It was the trailer for Alien. It became a life-long obsession after I finally bit the bullet and watched the movie 5 years after it came out.

Blanche, I've been told you wanted to invite the Alien home for s'mores too. That's what makes you so beautiful.

Scott, I really did think of that Holy Grail scene when I was cutting this vlog.

NJ, I've never seen that trailer before. But it is true that in the books Mary Poppins is pretty stern and formidable. Sharper edged than the Julie Andrews character. I'm sorry you were fairy tale deprived as a child, but I have a video fairy tale in the works...

Cindy & TG: Now that I think about it, the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book is pretty scary in parts--but in a very child-satisfactory way since everybody gets what they deserve. Kids are maniacs for rough justice. The first Roald Dahl book I ever read was "James and the Giant Peach" and the adventure kicks off with James' two unpleasant aunts being squashed under the peach. This episode of Alfred Hitchcock is a dramatization of a Roald Dahl story for adults:

^Enjoyed this, watched it on my lunch break today. It would seem that the husband got the "rough justice" you referred to, being that he was a cad who was about to leave his pregnant wife for the woman he'd been having an affair with. But Alfred never seemed to be able to let rough justice be. If the perp didn't get caught in the story, he'd tell us how they got caught in some way afterwards.

Matilda was my favorite Dahl story. Lots of rough justice in that one.

How is it going in the snowstorms of New England?

In the summer Tornado's, in the winter ice storms ...
